6 Pests to Look for: Winter Pest Management

No one realizes how badly they don't want household pests around their Boston home until they discover a common household pest lapping up discarded food and water in the kitchen or bathroom or the crawl space under the house. Don't allow common house pests from invading your home this year and follow these tips.

Common Pests in Boston Winters

1. Cockroaches

Roach Food Sources:
  • Dairy Products
  • Meat Products
  • Other insects, including injured or dead cockroaches
  • Dry or fresh blood
  • Human waste
  • Sugar and starch
Diseases Roaches Spread:
  • Cholera
  • Typhoid
  • Diarrhea
  • Viruses like polio
  • Dysentery
  • Leprosy

2. Mice and Rats

Rat - Fox Pest ControlRodent Prevention Tips:
  • Sanitize the house frequently and consider purchasing an automatic vacuum cleaner that runs every night to prevent nocturnal rodent activity
  • Remove fallen fruits and vegetables from the yard to avoid rodent attractants
  • Empty all interior garbages daily and ensure the exterior dumpster seals completely and is located at least twenty feet from the house.
Signs of an Infestation:
  • Mouse droppings left everywhere, especially in food storage locations or drawers
  • Squeaking and scratching at night
  • Shredded papers, wall insulation, pillow or blanket stuffing, which are used for nesting materials

3. Bed bugs

Bed bugs only drink blood from mammals and generally remain within twenty feet. They can consume blood for over 12 minutes.

  • Ribbed Abdomen
  • Without a bloodmeal: reddish-brown, flat, and oval
  • After feeding: balloon-shaped and dark red
  • Vestigial wings near the pronotum
  • Six legs and two antennae
Signs of an Infestation:
  • Crumb-like exoskeletons, like transparent, dead-looking insects
  • Crumb-like eggshells, usually yellowish
  • Poop that looks like pepper dots
  • Bloodstains all over the bed
Harborage Locations:
  • Mattress and box spring seams
  • Bed frames
  • Carpet folds
  • Junctions between wall and floor or wall and ceiling
  • Other crevices throughout the house

4. Flies

Fruit flies and drain flies appear almost identical, but the best way to get rid of drain flies is to apply an over-the-counter drain cleaner frequently in all the house drains, especially in areas the flies appear the most.

Keep fruit covered and seal all food items in airtight containers, and never leave garbages full around the house.

5. Carpenter ants

Carpenter ants can cause enormous amounts of damage and thousands of dollars in repairs.

A mature colony can establish a satellite colony. Made up of workers, larvae, and pupae, with no reproductive ants, satellite colonies widen territory.

If your efforts to eliminate a colony inside your house have repeatedly proven fruitless, the infestation could recur due to the presence of a satellite colony in the walls, leaving the queen alive in spite of everything you attempt.

Differences between Termites and Carpenter ants
  • Carpenter ants tunnel through wood but can't consume it like termites
  • The four carpenter ant wings (which only reproductive ants have, and only when a mature colony swarms) are two different sizes, but termite wings are all equal in length
  • Ants have three body segments, and termites only have two

6. Spiders

The two most dangerous spiders in the United States aren't that dangerous at all. Although spiders can bite, black widows and brown recluses don't cause any permanent damage as long as the individual receives immediate emergency medical care.

Black Widow
  • Red hourglass shape on the underside of the abdomen
  • Red markings on top of the abdomen (in some species)
  • Hang upside down in messy webs
Brown Recluse
  • Uniform sandy brown color
  • 1/2 inch body length with widely spread legs
  • Dark markings on the abdomen
  • Not web spinners, though they use silk for their hidden nests

Pest Protection You Can Do at Home

Use silicone caulking to seal entry points around doors, windows, and sill plates, and seal other cracks, and store firewood at least 20 feet from the home. Also, consider placing firewood and compost piles on a platform 1 foot off the ground to deter rodents.

Seal potential entry points, including the following:
  • Gaps around water and gas pipes
  • Cracks and crevices around doors and windows
  • Cracks along foundations or sill plates
  • Cracks and gaps around brick siding

We had a wonderful experience with our technician. Weston was easy to talk to and explained everything well. Josh, who sold us the service, was very kind also. Not pushy at all. And very informative. Thank you. We look forward to working with you in the future.
